Governor Inslee,

On May 25th last year, George Floyed was murdered by Derek Chauvin.

A white police officer. In Minneapolis.

Here is how, and why: Every single system and institution that Black people in this country interact with on a daily basis -including in Washington state- was designed to enforce—not end, our oppression.

For 9 minutes and 29 seconds Derek Chauvin used his body to suffocate a man until he was dead.

Policing is the system that set up the murder of George Floyd; the criminal justice system as currently designed will determine the verdict.

Washington state regulates countless professions more closely than law enforcement despite the fact that police officers can and have taken lives.

These are our Lives.

We’re not asking to live; we demand it.
We’re not asking for change; we make it.

As of yesterday, nine bills from the Washington Black Lives Matter Alliance’s 2021 Reparations for Black Lives priorities have passed through both chambers. They are soon headed to your desk.

None of these police bills, by themselves, fixes anything. Together, they address specific issues and create systemic change.

When they arrive at your desk, we demand your signature. Washington state is ready for a higher standard of safety.
