ACTION ALERT: Keep Black kids with their families

It is time to end the state sanctioned trafficking of our babies.

You got this bill to the Appropriations Committee. Now we need that committee to send it to the floor.

Black and Indigenous families and families of color are far more likely to come into care—but their families are far less likely to be given the opportunity and support to step in. This is not a reflection of families’ ability to care for their own. It is straight up the result of a system designed to prevent that. A system designed for erasure. No more.

Giving relatives a chance to care for their family members maintains connection, culture, and community. That’s everything.

YES, we need you to tell lawmakers AGAIN: It is time to end the state sanctioned trafficking of our babies. Keep Black kids with their families.

About the Bill

SB 5151 would license—and provide resources to—family to care for relatives without bringing them into the traditional foster system.

Members of the House Appropriations Committee:

47,000 people in Washington right now are raising a relative’s child. For every child in formal foster care, there are 11 being raised by grandparents outside the system. Those caregivers deserve the licensing and resources they need to keep Black and Brown families together.

It is in the best interest of Washington, for children and families to ensure funding for SB5151 and that state agencies are given adequate funding to carry out the bill’s mission of keeping families together.

I strongly urge you to pass SB 5151 through Appropriations and to send this bill to the House floor.

In solidarity with with Black Lives and all families across Washington,
